Investing in First 5 Shasta Commission Children and Families

By providing and promoting opportunities for parents, family members, caregivers, service providers, and community members to work together, we create a better future where healthy children and communities thrive.

About Us

First 5 Shasta is a public organization created in 1998 and supported by Proposition 10 Tobacco Tax Funding. We are an independent, self-governing commission led by community members with specialized expertise or interest in Shasta County's youngest children.

We have been serving Shasta County for decades, helping to fill the gap in access to early childhood development services. Our efforts focus on directing parents, family members, and caregivers to the resources they need to improve the early health, development and learning of children ages 0-5.

We actively work to create partnerships that offer funds, services, and programs that support service providers in their work to help children and families thrive in Shasta County. Since our establishment, we've invested close to $30 million in local efforts.

First 5 Shasta County Commission

The First 5 Shasta Commission consists of nine Commissioners, as well as a team of staff responsible for carrying out the work of the Commission. The Shasta County Board of Supervisors appoints commissioners who serve three-year terms and may be re-appointed to additional terms.

The Commission includes representatives from the Board of Supervisors and the Shasta County Health and Human Services departments, as well as other community members representing the needs of children ages 0-5 and their families. Together, they leverage their expertise in knowledgeable decision-making to best serve young children and their families. All meetings observe the Ralph M. Brown Act, and members of the public are welcome to attend.
