Training Description
What if the Positive in childhood has a lasting protective and healing impact similar to the lasting harmful impact of trauma? The resulting science of health & safety outcomes from positive experiences is ongoing and includes strong evidence that Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) have a lifelong protective and healing effect that can mitigate the negative effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). The goal of this training will be to introduce the broader community to the PCE approach and why it is being implemented in Shasta County.
Presenter Bio
Carla Ritz is the Managing Director at The Montana Institute. With over 17 years of experience working coast-to-coast as a nonprofit leader, convener, early childhood and prevention advocate, and innovator, Carla brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to her role. Before joining the Institute, she served as the Executive Director for First 5 Lake County in Northern California, where she collaborated at the county, regional, and state levels to reduce ACEs by applying the principles of the Science of the Positive.
Carla holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Arizona and is currently pursuing a Master’s of Education in Organizational Leadership & Learning from The George Washington University.

This 1‑hour Lunch & Learn, presented in collaboration with Postpartum Support International (PSI), provides an overview of Perinatal Mental Health Disorders (PMHDs) with a focus on the unique needs of families in Shasta County and other rural communities. Participants will explore the connection between PMHDs, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), and the risk factors impacting perinatal mental health outcomes. The training will define PMHDs, core symptoms across the perinatal period, which includes the unique presentations of fathers and partners. Participants will learn evidence‑based treatment options and local and national resources available to support pregnant and postpartum individuals and families. Emphasis will be placed on increasing awareness, early identification, and culturally responsive support within rural systems of care.
About the presenter
Christina McCabe is a local doula and lactation counselor with extensive experience supporting over 100 families in Shasta County through trauma‑informed, family‑centered perinatal care. She is a social work student with a focus on supporting individuals and families impacted by perinatal mental health disorders (PMHDs) and substance use disorders (SUDs). Christina has volunteered with Postpartum Support International (PSI), supporting parents navigating PMHDs and SUDs through peer‑to‑peer programming. Currently, she serves on the California Chapter of PSI, where she is a member of the Underserved Communities Committee and the Training and Education Committee. She now provides specialized doula support to high‑risk and substance‑impacted perinatal clients in her community.
